Rocky Mountain Paca Hats made from our alpaca's fiber!

A room full of alpaca fiber encouraged me to start creating something out of all this fiber. I decided to try felting. And of course being me, I decided to try a difficult project, hats! Watch how we learn! These first two hats you see are the beginning and encourages me to go on. I decided to stay with my design and call them, "Rocky Mountain Paca Hats" (Patent is Pending). Felting is so much Fun!

My First Felted, "Rocky Mountain Paca Hat" #001

It looks really nice but, I had not gotten the felting down and it was to small for my head. There were other minor flaws that I had to get worked out too.

Second Felted,  "Rocky Mountain Paca Hat" #002

This hat fit my head a little better. But, I just started getting the felting down when I reached the crown. I also managed to work out some other faults. I put fabric stiffener on the brim, which in turn made it as hard as a rock. I could now throw it through a window and break it. And I really wanted to, until I realized I would have to pay for the window.

My third hat is sold to a wild man, David Roy. I have the felting down now and other flaws worked out. I started with it a little to big for him and I have fixed that. I still need to get my pattern down so I can keep making the hats consistantly everytime. I am working on that. He loves the hat very much and I have to admit that my head swelled just a little bit. Thank you, David Roy from Colorado for being the first brave soul to buy my hat and listen to my crazy ideas about felting!

I learned more on felting on this hat. Things I could do that I hadn't thought of before. I had to take the crown off and re-do it because it was looking to much like a top hat, mountain top hat that is. I have not updated the photograph but I am pleased with it. I also got my pattern down because of it and now can make the hats consistant. Thank you, Matt H. from Colorado for buying this hat for your friend. Shhhhh!

My favorite hat, not only is it beautiful but it fits my head perfectly. Unfortunately, it is sold, so I'll keep going until I'm finished with my commitments, then my hat will come. Thank you again, Matt H. from Colorado, for buying this hat for yourself. I think it fits your very outdoor personality and I can't wait to see you in it floating down the river in a float tube.

Well, I had planned on keeping this hat for myself, but you see, this auction came up to help save Llama's in Montana that had to be evacuated. I put this hat up for auction to help raise money for them and it sold.

This beautiful hat was made from the fiber of an alpaca from another ranch, called Walnut Hill Farm, owned by Nancy and Don Schell. Nancy wanted a hat from this female that she had sold. The fiber of this female alpaca was gorgeous, a rich, deep, dark brown color that was very soft and beautifully crimped throughout. No wonder she won a blue ribbon! It made me sad to card it. But, the result turned out beautifully. A thinner felt with a nice fuzzy texture to the top of the hat. Visit Walnut Hill Farm at... www.alpacanation.com/farmsandbreeders/03_viewfarm.asp?name=15988
